The English style of mustard originated in Durham in 1720 when a lady by the name of Mrs Clements invented a special recipe known as Durham Mustard. At one time there were three separate mustard factories in the city of Durham.

Durham Castle

Durham Castle is dating from 1072 and was the seat of the Prince Bishops until 1832.  In 1832 Durham Castle became the foundation college of Durham University. Durham Castle contains the Norman Chapel, Great Hall, and the 57ft high Black Staircase which is made from solid oak. Durham Castle’s 15th century kitchen is still in use after all these years.  Guided tours are available and will show you more about the past and present day life of Durham Castle.
